beginnings as a Pennsylvania dairy cooperative to its growth into an
international dairy player operating in over 30 countries, Smithfield
has remained true to its roots.

To this day, Smithfield produces its cream
cheese in the same place where the original
New Holland, PA factory was built.

Smithfield Cream Cheese Today

To this day, Smithfield produces its cream cheese in the same place where the
original New Holland, PA factory was built, according to the original Amish recipe.
It sources fresh milk and cream from regional dairy cooperatives that adhere to
strict quality guidelines and responsible farm and animal practices. With all-natural,
simple ingredients and a velvety texture, Smithfield is perfect for all
at-home or professional applications.

Smithfield History

1935

Smithfield got its start as an Amish-owned production plant — but as the plant grew, it required additional oversight to scale the business. Dairy expert Meyer Zausner took control of the plant to guide its expansion into new categories of cheese.

1949

With this growth, cream cheese became the core of the business in the 1940s. A supplier of quality dairy products since the 1930s, Smithfield officially became a patented trademark name in 1949 as an emblem of its fine cheese.

1967

When Meyer Zausner passed away, his son Sol Zausner became the business leader. The company continued to thrive — and in 1967, the Zausner Foods Corporation merged with Tuxedo Foods Company, exponentially expanding its production.

1978

In 1978, the Zausner Foods Corporation found its home with what is now Savencia Fromage & Dairy (formerly Bongrain). Smithfield is proudly part of this globally renowned entity—the number one specialty cheese company in the world.

2020

From grocery stores and kitchens, to bakeries and restaurants across the globe, Smithfield has remained constant: a family-owned, Pennsylvania-bred company with a mission to offer superior quality cream cheese.
